Nuclear Apprenticeship Survey 2020 – Deadline extended

The Nuclear Skills Strategy Group’s Nuclear Apprenticeship Survey is currently open for submissions. After requests from employers in the sector, the deadline has now been extended to 30th September.

We would like to encourage all organisations employing apprentices in the nuclear sector to complete the survey. It is the only way of gathering information specific to the nuclear sector’s use of apprenticeships, and last year’s survey gave some good insights including:

  • Over 2,000 apprentices employed in the UK nuclear sector
  • Two-thirds of these apprentices are new young entrants to the sector
  • The majority are in occupations at Levels 2 and 3, although an increasing number (around 200) are at degree apprenticeship level 6
  • Engineering & maintenance occupations are most numerous, and the sector’s own five nuclear-specific Standards are well-used
  • Very high completion and retention rates, compared with official figures from across the country

The Secretary of State for Education personally asked for a copy of the report when it was produced last year, and a number of the issues raised served as a good basis for discussions between the Nuclear Skills Strategy Group and Government regarding apprenticeship policies.
